User Interviews are a research method in UX design where designers speak directly with users to gather insights about their needs, behaviors, motivations, and pain points.
How I use it
User interviews aren’t always possible for every project, and they may not be necessary at every level of UX design work. But when they are needed, the insights gained are truly priceless.
I’ve had the opportunity to conduct quite a few user interviews, and I find them to be some of the most exciting and enjoyable conversations to partake in. I typically prepare 5–10 questions, but the goal isn’t just to get through the list, it’s to engage with the interviewee and give them space to share what they’re passionate about. While I’ll occasionally need to guide the conversation to stay on track, letting the interviewee talk freely often leads to the best insights.
Once the interviews are complete, I work to identify key themes across them. These insights then inform the rest of the design process, shaping tools like User Personas, Jobs to Be Done statements, and more.
