Color Theory

Intermediate

Color Theory is the principles and guidelines for selecting and combining colors to create visually appealing, functional, and accessible interfaces.

How I use it

When working on the UI design I still need to keep a strong UX in mind. Color Theory helps to achieve both a beautiful design as well as a useable one.

By sticking to Color Theory my UI designs have a strong hierarchy, putting the most important information in the right colors. I use the 60-30-10 color rule when designing to ensure I maintain a strong color hierarchy.

Another area I’ve learned a lot about using color is managing emotions. Simple things like green equals success and red equals an error, but more subtly it can mean using orange to convey energy.

Finally, the walking the tightrope between creating a engaging User Interface look and feel while also keeping a simple User Experience is maintaining readability and accessibility for all. To do this I use an ADA compliance checker here.
